中国の南部が原産です。わが国に分布する「しゅろ（棕櫚）」に似ていますが、葉柄が短くて、葉の裂片が折れ曲がりません。雌雄異株で、高さは１０メートルほどになります。４月から５月ごろ、肉穂花序をだして淡黄色の花を咲かせます。果実は青黒色に熟し、白い粉がふきます。

ヤシ科シュロ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Trachycarpus wagnerianus。英名は Chinese windmill palm。

The Chinese windmill palm (Trachycarpus wagnerianus) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to southern China. This tree is dioecious and can reach about 10 m in height. It is similar to the Chusan palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) distributed in Japan, but the petioles are short and the leaf splinters do not bend. The spadix is borne and bloom pale yellow flowers from April to May. The fruits ripen bluish black and are covered with white bloom.
