東南アジアが原産です。「へちま」の近縁で、インドから東南アジアでは野菜として栽培されています。蔓性で他の樹木などに絡みついて伸びます。葉は大きな腎形で互生し、縁には粗い鋸歯があります。葉の両面は短毛に被われます。夏、葉腋に黄色い雄花と雌花を咲かせます。果実は円筒形のうり状果で、１０個の稜があります。若い果実は食用にされます。

The ridged luffa (Luffa acutangula) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is an annual herb that is native to Southeast Asia. It is closely related to "Luffa" and cultivated as a vegetable in India and Southeast Asia. This herb is a trailing vine and climbs up adjacent plants. The leaves are large reniform and alternate with coarsely-toothed margins. The both sides of leaves are covered with short hairs. The male and female flowers are borne on the axiles in summer. The fruits are cylindrical pepo with 10 ridges. The young fruits are used for food.
