"Tokai-sumire" (Viola tokaiensis) belongs to Violaceae (the Viola family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to westward from western Kanagawa prefecture to the Pacific Ocean Side of Honshu and Shikoku, Japan. This herb grows in montane zone (beech forest) and can reach 3-5 cm in height. The leaves are cordate 1-2 cm long with coarse teeth, and the reverse sides are pale green, not tinged purplish. The pale purple flowers come on the stalks from April to May. The petals have pale purple stripes on the surface, and purple stripes on the reverse side.
