The Du heng (Asarum forbesii) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in central-eastern China. It grows in forests and moist valleys, reaching a height of 10 to 15 cm. The leaves are broadly cordate to reniform-cordate, dark green, with white spots along the midrib. It is the only deciduous species among the Kan-aoi group. It blooms with dark purple flowers around April to May. The calyx tube is cylindrical to bell-shaped, not constricted at the throat. The lobes are broadly ovate. There are 12 stamens. The rhizome and roots are used medicinally and are known as "土細辛" (tu xi xin). In Chinese, it is called "杜衡" (Du heng).
