メキシコの南東部が原産です。低木帯や半砂漠地帯に生え、高さは１０メートルほどになります。単幹で根本が肥大して、トックリのようなかたちになります。葉は幹の先端に集まり、線状の葉が反り返りながら垂れ下がります。大きく成長した個体では、幹頂に直立した花序をだし、黄白色の花を咲かせます。わが国では「ポニーテール」の愛称で、観葉植物として流通しています。 |

リュウゼツラン科トックリラン属の常緑中高木で、学名は Beaucarnea recurvata（syn. Nolina recurvata）。英名は Ponytail palm、Bottle palm、Nolina、Elephant's foot。 |

The Ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to southeastern Mexico. This tree grows in semi-desert areas and can reach about 10 m in height. It is a single trunk and swollen like a bottle at the base. The leaves are linear and fasciculate at the top of trunk. The erect inflorescences are produced on the apex and the small creamy white flowers bloom only on mature trees. In Japan, it is distributed as a houseplant under the nickname "ponytail". |
