わが国の奄美群島にある徳之島の固有種です。徳之島中部の森林や石灰岩の崖などに生え、高さは１０～１５センチになります。地面から葉柄が立ち上がり、卵状三角形の葉がつきます。１月から５月ごろ、淡紫褐色の花を咲かせます。萼筒の中央部がやや膨らんでいるのが特徴です。別名で「いのかわかんあおい（井之川寒葵）」とも呼ばれます。環境省のレッドリストでは、絶滅危惧Ⅱ類（ＶＵ）に指定されています。

The "Tokunoshima-kan-aoi" (Asarum simile) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species found on Tokunoshima Island in Japan's Amami Islands. It grows in forests and on limestone cliffs in central Tokunoshima and reaches a height of 10 to 15 cm. Petioles rise from the ground, bearing ovate-triangular leaves. From January to around May, it blooms with light purple-brown flowers. A distinctive feature is that the central part of the calyx tube is slightly swollen. It is also known by the alternative name "Inokawa-kan-aoi". It is designated as Vulnerable (VU) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
