インド洋の西部、マスカリン諸島にあるロドリゲス島の固有種です。わが国へは明治時代の末期に渡来しました。高さは１０メートルほどになり、幹は肥大して徳利形となっています。また幹にははっきりとした環状紋があります。幹の上部に肉穂花序をつけ、オレンジ色の花を下垂して咲かせます。小さな円柱状の果実を実らせます。

ヤシ科トックリヤシ属の常緑高木で、学名は Hyophorbe verschaffeltii。英名は Spindle palm。

The Spindle palm (Hyophorbe verschaffeltii) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is endemic to Rodrigues Island in the Mascarene Islands, in the western part of the Indian Ocean. It came to Japan at the end of the Meiji era (about 120 years ago). The height is about 10 m, and the trunk is enlarged and has a sake bottle shape. There is also a clear ring crest on the trunk. Inflorescences are borne to the upper part of the trunk, and orange flowers hang down and bloom. It bears small columnar fruits.
