わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに東北アジアに分布しています。高層湿原に生え、高さは３０〜７０センチになります。葉は線形で堅く、叢生します。６月から７月ごろ、茎頂に小穂をだします。上部の小穂は雄性で、下部は雌性です。雌小穂の黒褐色の鱗片が特徴です。別名で「ほろむいすげ（幌向菅）」とも呼ばれます。

カヤツリグサ科スゲ属の多年草で、学名は Carex middendorffii。英名はありません。

"Tomari-suge" (Carex middendorffii) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu north to Hokkaido in Japan, and Northeast Asia. It grows in high moors and can reach 30-70 cm in height. The leaves are linear, stiff and crowding. Spikelets are borne on the shoot apex from June to July. The upper spikelets are male and the lower ones are female. It is characterized by black-brown scales of female spikelets. It is also known as "Horomui-suge" in Japan.
