メキシコあるいはペルーが原産だといわれています。わが国へは１７世紀に渡来しましたが、本格的には昭和時代になってアメリカから甘みに富んだ桃色系が導入されてからです。フランスでは「愛のりんご」、ドイツでは「天国のりんご」と呼ばれています。わが国では現在、「桃太郎」と「ファースト」が主に栽培されています。

ナス科トマト属の一年草で、学名は Lycopersicon esculentum。英名は Tomato。
The Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is a annual herb that is native to Mexico or Peru. This herb was introduced into Japan in 17th century, though it became common in Showa Era (1912-1989) when the pink sweet species was introduced from the United States. Tomato is also called "Pomme d'amour" (apple of love) in France, "Paradeisapfel" (apple of paradise) in Germany. 'Momo-taro' and 'First' are cultivated mainly in Japan nowadays.
