The Great St. Johnswort (Hypericum ascyron) belongs to the family Clusiaceae. It is a perennial herb that is native throughout Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, east-northern China and Siberia. This herb grows on hillsides and mountains, and can reach about 1 m in height. The stem is quadrangular and erect. The leaves are lanceolate, entire and arranged in opposite. The leaves have sparse bright dots. The flowers are yellow, swirly, and bloom on the terminal branches from July to August. They last one day. The fruits are ovate-round capsules.
