北アメリカが原産です。わが国へは明治時代のはじめに渡来しました。成長が極めて早く、高さは２０メートルほどになります。葉は羽状複葉で対生し、ふつう３〜５個の小葉があります。雌雄異株です。４月ごろ、黄緑色の花を下垂して咲かせます。果実は９月から１０月ごろに熟しますが、食用になります。また樹液からはメープルシロップが採れるそうです。別名で「ネグンドかえで」とも呼ばれます。写真中３は、斑入り園芸品種の「フラミンゴ（cv. Flamingo）」。

カエデ科カエデ属の落葉高木で、学名は Acer negundo。英名は Box elder。

The Box elder (Acer negundo) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to North America. It was introduced into Japan in the day of early Meiji Era (1868-1912). This tree grows vary fast and it can reach about 20 m in height. The leaves are opposite, pinnately compound with usually 3-5 leaflets. It is dioecious. The drooping yellow-green flowers bloom in April. The fruits ripen in September to October and are edible. Box elder has sweetish sap used locally to prepare maple sugar. It is also known as "Negundo-kaede" in Japan. The 4th photo shows the spotted garden variety 'Flamingo'.
