中国南部や台湾が原産です。庭園竹として、関東地方以西に植栽されています。高さは５メートル以上になり、節間の長さは６０〜８０センチになります。やや紫色を帯びます。各節から３個以上の短い枝が出て、枝先に３〜９個の披針形の葉がつきます。葉は洋紙質で、裏面に微毛が密生します。５月から６月ごろ、タケノコがでます。別名で「だいみょうちく（大名竹）」とも呼ばれます。

イネ科トウチク属のタケ類で、学名は Sinobambusa tootsik。英名は Tootsik bamboo。

The Tootsik bamboo (Sinobambusa tootsik) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a bamboo that is native to southern Cnina and Taiwan. This bamboo is cultivated as a garden bamboo in the west of the Kanto region. The culms are tinged purple, and can reach up to 5 m in height. The internodes measure 60-80 cm long. More than three short branches are borne at the each nodes. The 3-9 lanceolate leaves are arranged at the tip of branches. The leaves are foreign papery with dense pubescent on the abaxial sides. The shoots are borne in May through June.
