わが国の本州、宮城県以南から四国・九州に分布しています。山地の沢沿いなどに生え、高さは１０〜２０センチになります。葉は３〜５出複葉で、縁には鈍鋸歯があります。根生葉は数個つき、茎葉は対生します。４月から５月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋に淡黄白色の花を咲かせます。花弁状に見えるのは萼片で、上向きから横向きに咲きます。果実は袋果で、熟すとサバの尾のかたちに開きます。

キンポウゲ科シロカネソウ属の多年草で、学名は Dichocarpum trachyspermum。英名はありません。

"Tougoku-saba-no-o" (Dichocarpum trachyspermum) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed southward from Miyagi prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This herb grows along motane streams and can reach 10-20 cm in height. The leaves are trifoliate to pentafoliolate with obtuse toothed edges. The basal leaves are several and the cauline leaves are opposite. The pale yellowish white flowers appear on the stem apices and axiles from April to May. They are petal-liked calyx lobes and bloom upward to sideways. The fruits are follicles and look like mackerel caudal fin when ripen.
