The Spike winter hazel (Corylopsis spicata) belongs to Hamamelidaceae (the Witch hazel family). It is a small deciduous tree that is an indigenous species in Kochi prefecture of Shikoku, Japan. This tree grows in serpentine or limestone soils and can reach about 4 m in height. The leaves are ovate-round to obovate-round and alternate. The drooping pale yellow flowers come in March to April before foliation. It is defined by the ponceau anthers.
