わが国の固有種で、四国と九州に分布しています。低山の林縁などに生え、高さは1〜2メートルになります。樹皮は灰褐色で平滑、皮目が目立ちます。葉は長楕円形で対生し、先端は尾状に尖り、縁には不揃いな鋸歯があります。6月から9月ごろ、葉腋から集散花序をだし、小さな淡紅紫色の花を咲かせます。果実は球形の核果で、秋に紫色に熟します。
クマツヅラ科ムラサキシキブ属の落葉低木で、学名は Callicarpa shikokiana。英名はありません。
"Tosa-murasaki" (Callicarpa shikokiana) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan. This tree grows in forest edges in low mountains and can reach 1-2 m in height. The barks are grayish-brown and smooth with obvious lenticles. The leaves are oblong and alternate with caudal tips and irregular serrate margins. The cymes are borne in the axiles and bloom small pale magenta flowers from June to September. The fruits are round drupes and ripen in purple in fall.
