わが国の固有種で、四国の徳島県と高知県に分布しています。徳島県の那賀川、勝浦川周辺と高知県の四万十川流域の川岸の岩場に生え、高さは２メートルほどになります。近畿地方以北に分布する「いわしもつけ（岩下野）」の変種で、母種よりも細長い倒披針形の葉が互生します。５月ごろ、枝先に散房花序をだし、小さな白色の花をいっぱい咲かせます。庭園や公園などに植栽されます。

バラ科シモツケ属の落葉低木で、学名は Spiraea niopponica var. tosaensis。英名はありません。

"Tosa-shimotsuke" (Spiraea niopponica var. tosaensis) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is an evergreen shrub that is endemic to Japan and is distributed in Tokushima and Kochi prefectures in Shikoku. It grows in rocky areas around the Naka and Katsuura rivers in Tokushima prefecture and on the banks of the Shimanto river basin in Kochi prefecture, and is about 2 m high. It is a variety of "Iwa-shimotsuke" distributed north of the Kinki region, and has elongated lanceolate leaves that are longer than the mother species. Around May, the inflorescences are borne on the tips of the branches and bloom a lot of small white flowers. It is planted in gardens and parks.
