"Tougoku-shisoba Japanese skullcap" (Scutellaria maekawae f. abbreviata) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Tohoku district south to Kanto and Chubu district of Honshu in Japan. This herb grows in wettish forest floors and edges of mountains, and it can reach 5-15 cm in height. The leaves are ovate or long-ovate, semi-thick, with spreading white hairs. The leaf surface has whitish patch outlining the veins and the abaxial side is tinged purple. The purple, labiate flowers bloom from May to July.
