The "To-tsubaki" (Camellia reticulata) belongs to Teaceae (the Tea family). It is a semi-tall evergreenl tree that is distributed in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southwestern China. It grows in mixed forests in mountainous areas and can reach heights of 10 to 15 m. The leaves are dark green, leathery, glossy and entire, ranging from elliptic to oblong in shape. The flowers bloom from March to May. The flowers are 7 to 10 cm in diameter, and are pale pink to dark pink in color, with some rare almost white varieties. They have been cultivated for ornamental purposes since the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and there are many horticultural varieties. In Chinese, they are called "滇山茶" (dian shan cha).
