南アメリカのブラジルからアルゼンチン北部が原産です。わが国へは園芸品種として昭和時代のはじめに渡来しました。いまでは各地で帰化しています。道ばたや、やや湿った林縁などに生え、茎は地面を這って広がります。葉は卵状楕円形から楕円形で互生し、縁は波打ちます。５月から８月ごろ、茎頂の葉腋から花柄を伸ばし、白色の花を１〜３個咲かせます。

ツユクサ科ムラサキツユクサ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Tradescantia fluminensis。英名は Wandering Jew、Small-leaf spiderwort。

The Wandering Jew (Tradescantia fluminensis) belongs to Commelinaceae (the Spiderwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to Brazil and northern Argentine. This herb was introduced into Japan in early Showa Era (about 80 years ago). Nowadays, it is naturalized in so many places. This herb grows in waste outskirts of wood or roadsides. The stem is creeping on the ground, and the leaves are ovate-elliptic to elliptic, alternate with wavy edges. The 1-3 white flowers come on the axillary peduncles from May to August.
