わが国の本州以南から四国・九州、世界では北半球に広く分布しています。耕作地や荒れ地に生え、高さは１０〜５０センチなり、茎頂は分枝します。葉は卵形で、細かい鋸歯があります。３月から６月、枝先に杯状花序をだします。花は小さな黄緑色で、葉に似た苞葉が数個あります。有毒植物です。和名は、皿に菜種油を入れた灯明（とうみょう）をおく灯台（とうだい）に似ていることから。中国語では「澤漆（ze qi）」と呼ばれます。

The Sun spurge (Euphorbia helioscopia) belongs Euphorbiaceae (Spurge family). It is an annual herb that is distribued southward from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan, as well as the Northern Hemisphere. This herb grows in arable lands and disturbed grounds and can reach 10-50 cm in height, branching toward the top. The leaves are ovate with a finely toothed margin. The cyathia are borne on the branching heads from March to June. The flowers are yellow-green with sevaral bracts similar to the leaves. It is highly poisonous. The Japanese name is similar to a lighthouse that holds a votive candle with rapeseed oil in a plate. In Chinese, it is called "澤漆" (ze qi).
