わが国の固有種で、近畿地方から中国地方に日本海沿いに分布しています。高さは４０〜５０センチになり、全体が白い綿毛に被われています。長楕円形の葉には浅い鋸歯があり、対生します。８月から９月ごろ、茎の先の穂状花序に青紫色の花を咲かせます。和名は、中国にある洞庭湖の水のように青い花が咲くことから。

ゴマノハグサ科ルリトラノオ属の多年草で、学名は Pseudolysimachion ornatum。英名はありません。

"Toutei-ran" (Pseudolysimachion ornatum) belongs to the Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and distributed to the Japan Sea side of Honshu; westward from Kinki district to Chugoku district. This herb can reach 40-50 cm in height and covered with white woolly hairs. The leaves are oblong and alternate with shallow toothed edges. The spikes are borne on the stem apices and bloom bluish purple flowers from August to September. The Japanese name is because blue flowers bloom like the water of Lake Dongba in China.
