アジアの亜熱帯地方、中国南西部からインドシナ半島、インド北部に分布しています。さなざまな場所に生え、高さは５〜１０メートルになります。幹や枝には、短い棘があります。葉は掌状に深裂して５０センチ以上の幅になり、長い葉柄があります。このかたちは、雪の結晶のようだと喩えられます。観葉植物として栽培されています。タイでは花蕾を食用に利用するそうです。中国語では「刺通草（ci tong cao）」と呼ばれます。

The Snowflake plant (Trevesia palmata) belongs to Araliaceae (the Ginseng family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed in the subtropical areas of Asia, from southwestern China to the Indo-china Peninsula and northern India. This tree grows in various places and can reach 5-10 m in height. The stems and branches have short spines. The leaves are deeply lobed palmately, up to 50 cm wide and more with long stalks. They look like stylized snowflakes. This plant is cultivated as an ornamental foliage plant. In Thailand, the flower buds are used for food. In Chinese, it is called "刺通草" (ci tong cao).
