メキシコ南部から中央アメリカ、熱帯南アメリカにかけて分布しています。スリナムでは、低湿地や低い川岸の優占種となっています。高さは２０メートル、幹径は４５センチくらいになります。特徴的なことは、この木とアリ（蟻）が共生関係にあることです。中空になった幹には、小さくどう猛なアリが住んでいて、木に危害を加えようとするものには、素早く現れて攻撃するそうです。

タデ科トリプラリス属の常緑高木で、学名は Triplaris sp.（属の総称）。英名は Long John。

The Long John (Triplaris sp.) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from southern Mexico to Central America and tropical South America. In Suriname, it is the dominant species in lowlands and low riverbanks. The height is 20 m and the trunk diameter is about 45 cm. What is characteristic is that this tree and ants are in a symbiotic relationship. Small, ferocious ants live on the hollow trunk, and those who try to harm the tree will quickly appear and attack.
