The Southern Japanese hemlock (Tsuga sieboldii) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from the Kanto region of Honshu west to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. It grows on the ridges of the low mountains and on nearby slopes, reaching a height of 30 m. The bark is taupe and cracks deeply vertically. The leaves are linear, with a slight dent at the tip and white stomatal lines on the back. It is monoecious and blooms at the tip of branches around April, and the fruits ripen in October.
