The Korean plantain lily (Hosta clausa var. clausa) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the central to northern parts of the Korean Peninsula and northeastern China. It grows along riverbanks and reaches a height of about 20 cm. The leaves are lanceolate with petioles and are deep green in color. In summer, it extends a flower stalk and blooms reddish-purple flowers. Its characteristic feature is that these flowers do not open. The flowers fall without opening and are sterile due to being triploid. This plant is used as food in Korea. The specific epithet derives from the Latin "clausa" (closed).
