	わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは２～３メートルほどになります。葉は広倒卵形で先端は鋭く尖り、基部は円形で互生します。縁には不揃いの重鋸歯があります。雌雄同株で、３月から５月ごろ、葉の展開前に下垂した花序に花を咲かせます。果実は、先端がくちばし状の果苞に包まれた堅果で、食用になります。
	カバノキ科ハシバミ属の落葉低木で、学名は Corylus sieboldiana。英名は Japanese hazel。
	The Japanese hazel (Corylus sieboldiana) belongs to Betulaceae (the Birch family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula. This tree grows in mountains and can reach 2-3 m in height. The leaves are broad obovate, alternate with acute tips and round bases. They have irregular duplicato-serratus edges. This tree is monoesis, and the flowers come in the drooping inflorescences in March to May before foliation. The fruits are nuts which covered with beak shaped bracts and edible.
