The "Tsukushi-iwa-hego" (Dryopteris commixta) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from the Kanto region of Honshu westwards to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, and the south-eastern part of China. It grows in the forest floor of slightly damp mountains, and is 50-90 cm tall. The leaves are pinnate compound, green, slightly glossy, and herbaceous. There are 17-20 pairs of lateral pinnae, and the pinnae have short stipes at their bases. The base of the leaf stalk has blackish brown to light black scales that are not glossy. The sorus is attached close to the pedicel, and the indusium is small. In Chinese, it is called "混淆鱗毛蕨" (hun xiao lin mao jue).
