"Tsukiyo-take" (Omphalotus japonicus) belongs to the family Tricholomataceae. It is a fungus that is distributed throughout Japan, as well as in Far Eastern Russia and Northeastern China. It grows in clusters from late summer to fall, mainly on fallen beech trees, stumps, and standing dead trees, overlapping each other. The pileus is 10-25 mm in diameter, dark brown to purple-brown, and semi-circular or kidney-shaped when grown. The lamellae are white and have a weak luminescent property (lampteroflavin), so they may be seen glowing faintly green in the dark. The fruiting bodies contain illudin S as the main poisonous ingredient, and accidental ingestion can cause poisoning symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, and even death.
