わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに北半球の北部に分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の高層湿原に生え、細い茎は「みずごけ」のなかを這って広がります、葉は長楕円形の革質で、互生します。６月から７月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして淡紅色の花を咲かせます。果実は１センチほどの球形で、秋に紅色に熟し、食べることができます。

ツツジ科スノキ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Vaccinium oxycoccus。英名は Small cranberry。

The Small cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccus) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the northern part of Northern Hemisphere. This shrub grows in sub-alpine to alpine high moors and its slender stems crawl on the bog mosses. The leaves are oblong, leathery and arranged oppositely. The flowering stalks are borne and the pale rose pink flowers bloom from June to July. The fruits are globose, about 1 cm across, will ripen rose pink in fall and edible.
