Fortune's spindle (Euonymus fortunei) belongs to the Celastraceae (the Bittersweet family). It is an evergreen vine that is native throughout Japan, ae well as the Korean Peninsula, China and Philippines. This vine grows in forests of mountains and fields, and to 20 m long. It climbs up adjacent trees by the aerial roots. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs, elliptic or oblong, 2-6 cm long and 1.5-3 cm broad, with low toothed edges. The flowers are inconspicuous, 5 mm in diameter, with four-petaled small greenish-yellow, and bloom from June to July. The fruit is a four-lobed pale green capsule, which splits open to reveal the fleshy-coated orange seeds, when ripe.
