アメリカからメキシコが原産です。砂漠などに生え、高さは６０センチほどになりますが、ふつうはもっと低いです。葉は円形状心形ですが、粘液質の毛に被われています。唇形花は夏に咲き、白色からクリーム色、淡いふじ色などで、咽に黄橙色の蜜標があります。果実は蒴果です。若い果実は食用になり、ピクルスなどに利用されます。

ツノゴマ科ツノゴマ属の一年草で、学名は Proboscidea louisianica。英名は Ram's horn。

The Ram's horn (Proboscidea louisianica) belongs to the famly Martyniaceae. It is an annual herb that is native to the United States and Mexico. This herb grows in deserts, and can reach about 60 cm in height, but usually less. The leaves are round-cordate and covered with sticky hairs. The labiate flowers are white to cream, pale lavender with yellow-orange nectar guides in their throat, and bloom in summer. The fruits are capsules. The young fruits are edible and used as a pickled.
