The Carageen moss (Chondrus ocellatus) belongs to the family Gigartinaceae. It is a red algae that is distributed not only in various parts of Japan, but also in East Asia, the Pacific coast of north-central North America, and the Hawaiian Islands. It grows on rocks in the lower part of the intertidal zone and is 4 to 15 cm high. The plant is a flat leaf shape, and the tip branches in a slightly regular fork. The colors range from dark green to purple-red and light-red. It is used as a material for seaweed konjac and plaster.
