熱帯アフリカが原産だと考えられています。茎は蔓性で剛毛が生え、葉は心形をしています。果実は長さ１５〜２０センチの楕円形で、表面には円錐状の棘があります。果肉は鮮やかなエメラルドグリーンで、生食されます。ただし甘みは少なく、砂糖などをかけて食べるそうです。１９８０年代にニュージーランドで育種と栽培がはじまりました。わが国では、商品名の「キワノ」の名前で流通しています。

ウリ科キュウリ属の蔓性一年草で、学名は Cucumis metuliferus。英名は Horned melon、Kiwano、African horned cucumber。

The Horned melon (Cucumis metuliferus) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is an annual herb that is believed to be native to tropical Africa. The stems are vines with bristles and the leaves are heart-shaped. The fruits are elliptic, 15-20 cm long, with conical spines on the surface. The flesh is a bright emerald green and is eaten raw. However, it is less sweet and is eaten with sugar. Breeding and cultivation began in New Zealand in the 1980s. In Japan, it is distributed under the product name "Kiwano".
