北アメリカが原産です。わが国へは大正時代のはじめに帰化しました。現在では本州の関東地方以西に広がっています。名前は、花冠がほとんど開かず、いつまでもつぼみのように見えることから。葉は根生葉で全体に白い毛で被われています。５月から７月ごろに花茎を伸ばして小さな花を穂状につけます。茎が直立するこから、別名で「たちおおばこ（立ち大葉子）」とも呼ばれます。

オオバコ科オオバコ属の一年草または二年草で、学名は Plantago virginica。英名は Dwarf plantain、Pale-seed plantain。

The dwarf plantain (Plantago virginica) belongs to Plantaginaceae (the Plantain family). It is an annual to a biennial herb that is native to North America. This herb was introduced into Japan in Taisho Era (about 90 years ago), and it is naturalized widely westward from Kanto district of Honshu in Japan. The basal leaves are covered with white hairs. The spikes on the erect stalks are borne and bloom small flowers from May to July.
