The "Tsuru-mourinka" (Tylophora tanakae) belongs to Asclepiadaceae (the Milkweed family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from southern Kyushu to the Nansei Islands in Japan. It grows on coastal cliffs and grasslands, and is a vine that reaches 30 to 150 cm in length. Young branches are covered with short hairs. The leaves are ovate-elliptical to oblong and arranged in opposite pairs. From around May to September, it produces corymbs from the stem tips and leaf axils, blooming profusely with pale yellow flowers. The center of the corolla is purplish, and the margins are deeply lobed into five parts, forming a star shape. The fruit is a slender, V-shaped capsule. This species is well known as a food plant for the Chestnut tiger (Parantica sita). The Japanese name "mourinka" refers to "matsurika" (Jasmine).
