The Bonnet bellflower (Codonopsis lanceolata) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, China, Southeast Asia ans Australia. This herb grows in sunny montane woodlands and spreads 2-3 m long. The leaves are elliptic and alternate with acute tips. They look like 4-whorled at the terminal branches. The pale greenish-white, broad bell-shaped flowers bloom descending from August to October. The corolla is divided into 5 lobes and has purplish-brown mottles on the inside surface. It is also called "jii-sobu" (grandfather's freckles), but "sobu" is a Kiso dialect word meaning "freckles".
