わが国原産の「つばき（Camellia japonica）」と中国原産の「ちゃのき（Camellia sinensis）」との交雑種だと考えられています。花は小さな一重咲きで、果実はできません。「白侘助（cv. Wabisuke）」や「紅侘助（cv. Campanulata）」、「胡蝶侘助（cv. Bicolor）」などの園芸品種があります。「白侘助」は１１月から３月、「紅侘助」は２月から４月、「胡蝶侘助」は３月から４月に咲きます。写真上・中１は「白侘助」、中２・中３は「昭和侘助」、中４・下は「相模侘助」。

ツバキ科ツバキ属の常緑低木で、学名は Camellia wabisuke。英名はありません。

The Camellia wabisuke belongs to Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is considered a hybrid between "Camellia" (Camellia japonica) and "Tea tree" (Camellia sinensis). This flower is single blossoms and sterile. There are some cultivars, such as 'Shiro-wabisuke' (cv. Wabisuke) which bloom November to March, 'Beni-wabisuke' (cv. Campanulata) which bloom February to April and 'Kocho-wabisuke' (cv. Bicolor) which bloom March to April. The top and 2nd photos are 'Shiro-wabisuke', 3rd and 4th are 'Showa-wabisuke'、5th and bottom are 'Sagami-wabisuke'.
