北アメリカの東部から南部に分布しています。わが国へは昭和時代の初めに帰化しました。乾燥した草地や荒れ地に生え、高さは５０〜１００センチになります。茎は直立して節ごとに折れ曲がり、黄褐色の鋭い棘があります。葉は長楕円形で互生し、波状の大きな鋸歯があります。葉の両面には柔らかな毛が密生し、中央脈上にはまばらに棘があります。６月から１０月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして白色または淡紫色の花を咲かせます。果実は、はじめ緑色ですが、熟すと黄色くなります。 |

The Horse nettle (Solanum carolinense) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern and southern North America. It was naturalized to Japan in the early days of Showa Era (about 90 years ago). This herb grows in arid grasslands or barrens and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The stem is erect and zigzags turning at each leaf node with yellowish-brown acute spines. The leaves are oblong and alternate with wavy coarse toothed edges. Both sides of leaf are covered thickly with soft hairs and bears sparse spines on the midrib. The white or pale purple flowers come in June through October. The fruits are green at beginning, and ripen yellow. |
