熱帯アメリカと西インド諸島に分布しています。高さは４．５〜６メートルになります。葉は長楕円形で柔らかです。春から初夏にかけて花を咲かせます。花序には鮮やかな赤色の苞と、目立たない黄色い花弁がつきます。トリニダードトバゴの国花です。写真は園芸品種で、苞が複列につく「デビッドオーヤン（cv. David Auyong）」。和名では「しょうじょうとらのお（猩々虎の尾）」と呼ばれます。

アカネ科ワルシェウィッチア属の常緑低木で、学名は Warszewiczia coccinea。英名は Chaconia。Wild poinsettia、Pride of Trinidad and Tobago。

The Chaconia (Warszewiczia coccinea) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to tropical America and the West Indies. This tree can reach 4.5-6 m in height. The leaves are soft and oblong. The flowers come in mid spring to early summer. The inflorescences have bright red bracts and inconspicuous yellow petals. This is the national flower of Trinidad and Tobago. The photos are a cultivar 'David Auyong', which has a double row of bracts.
