バラ科ワレモコウ属の多年草で、学名は Sanguisorba officinalis。英名は Great burnet。
The Great burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to all over Japan, as well as widely in Asia and Europe. This herb grows in hill to mountain, sunny grasslands and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The leaves are impari-pinnate compound with 2-6 pairs of oblong leaflets. The elliptic inflorescences are borne at the terminal branches from August to October, and the flowers bloom from top down of clusters. The flower is non-petaled and has four dark magenta sepals. The Great burnet is known as one of seven autumnal flowers in Japan. In Chinese, it is called "地楡" (di yu).
