アメリカのカリフォルニア州南東部、アリゾナ州西部それにメキシコのバハ・カリフォルニアに分布しています。単幹で高さは１２〜１８メートルになります。葉は茎の先端につき、掌状複葉です。葉は多くの裂片に中裂し、青緑色から灰白色です、また長い葉柄があり、基部は赤紫色をしています。和名では「おきなやし（翁椰子）」とか「しらがやし（白髪椰子）」と呼ばれます。（写真は「ワシントンやしもどき」との雑種の可能性があります。）

ヤシ科ワシントンヤシ属の常緑高木で、学名は Washingtonia filifera。英名は Desert fan palm、California fan palm。

The Desert fan palm (Washingtonia filifera) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to southeastern California, western Arizona in the United States and Baja California in Mexico. This palm is a single trunk and can reac 12-18 m in height. The leaves are bluish green to grayish white, palmetely compound and fascicled on the shoot apex. They are divided into fronds with long petioles. The base of petioles are tinged reddish purple. The desert fan palm has cold resistance and planted in the parks or gardens.
