南アフリカの西ケープ地方が原産です。砂礫地の斜面に生え、高さは２メートル以上になります。葉は剣状で光沢があります。晩春から初夏にかけて、長い穂状花序をだし、ローズピンク色でトランペット形の花を咲かせます。花後、夏に地上部は枯死します。さまざまな花色の園芸品種があります。

The Cape bugle-lily (Watsonia borbonica) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Western Cape of South Africa. This herb grows in rocky or sandy slopes and can reach up to 2 m in height. The leaves are glossy, sword-shaped. The tall spikes are borne and bloom rose-pink, trumpet-shaped flowers in late spring to early summer. This herb is dying back after flowering in summer. There are many cultivars with varied flower colors.
