The Rough mule's-ear (Wyethia scabra) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to the central-western United States, from Montana south to Arizona and New Mexico. This herb grows in desert shrub and pinyon-juniper communities, and can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are scabrous, narrowly elliptic with prominent midvein and arranged in alternate. The yellow flower-heads, at least 7cm across, bloom solitary at the stem tips from April to June. The ray flowers are 10-23 and bright yellow, and the disk flowers are numerous and yellow.
