ヨーロッパから小アジアが原産です。森林、ふつうには石灰岩地に生え、高さは２５〜３５メートルになります。樹皮は灰色で平滑です。葉は卵形または倒卵形で互生し、長さ５〜１０センチ、縁は波打ちます。葉は秋に黄葉します。花は春、葉が展開した少し後、尾状花序につきます。果実は堅果で、鳥やリス・ネズミなど齧歯類の重要な餌になります。

ブナ科ブナ属の落葉高木で、学名は Fagus sylvatica。英名は European beech、Common beech。

The European beech (Fagus sylvatica) belongs to Fagaceae (the Beech family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to Europe and the Asia Minor. This tree grows in forests, generally on limestone, and can reach 25-35 m in height. The barks are gray and smooth. The leaves are obate or obobate, 5-10 cm long, alternate with undulate edges. The leaves turn in yellow in fall. The flowers are small catkins which appear shortly after the leaves in spring. The fruits are nuts and an important food for birds and rodents.
