ヨーロッパの地中海沿岸に分布しています。本種には、異なる地域に見られる２個の亜種があります。アラキアス亜種はポルトガルからクレタ島に、ウルフェニイ亜種は南フランスから小アジアに生息します。乾燥したところを好んで生え、高さは９０〜１２０センチになります。葉は狭い披針形で、青緑色です。３月から５月ごろ、茎の先の杯状花序に、小さな黄緑色の花を咲かせます。傷つけたときに出る白い乳汁は有毒で、皮膚被れの原因になります。

トウダイグサ科トウダイグサ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Euphorbia characias。英名は Large Mediterranean spurge、Bush spurge。

The Large Mediterranean spurge (Euphorbia characias) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. There are two main subspecies that are found in different regions. Euphorbia characias ssp. characias occurs from Portugal to Crete, and Euphorbia characias ssp. wulfenii occurs from southern France to Asia Minor. This herb grows preferably in dry areas, and can reach 90-120 cm in height. The leaves are narrow lanceolate and bluish green. The small yellowish green flowers bloom in the terminal cyathia from March to May. The white, milky sap is poisonous and a skin irritant.
