The Euphorbia ferox belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from the eastern part of the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape in South Africa. It grows in dry, gravelly, or rocky flat areas and gentle slopes, as well as in low shrublands, reaching a height of 20 to 100 cm. The branches are cylindrical, 2 to 3 cm in diameter, fleshy, and have indistinct knobs. The leaves are 2-3 mm long and fall off early. Instead, photosynthesis occurs via prominent spines and green stems. From May to August, small green flowers bloom in cyathia at the tips of the branches. The fruit is a capsule and is nearly spherical.
