インドやスリランカが原産だと考えられています。乾季のある熱帯バイオームに生え、高さは２〜５メートルになります。基部から分枝します。枝は直径３〜５センチ、稜があり、断面は三角形または菱形をしています。この枝は緑色で、白色の条斑があります。稜の上には、１０〜１５ミリ間隔で短い棘が対生します。葉は小さく、すぐに落葉します。栽培ではほとんど開花しませんが、茎の先端近くの対になった杯状花序に目立たないように咲きます。種小名は、乳を意味し、おそらく植物の乳白色の樹液に因みます。

トウダイグサ科トウダイグサ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Euphorbia lactea。英名は Mottled spurge、Mottled candlestick。

The Mottled spurge (Euphorbia lactea) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is an evergreen shrub that is believed to be native to India and Sri Lanka. It grows in tropical biomes with dry seasons and grows 2 to 5 m tall. It is branched from the base. The branches are 3 to 5 cm in diameter, with ribs and a triangular or rhombic cross section. These branches are green with white stipules. On the ribs are pairs of short spines 10 to 15 mm apart. The leaves are small and quickly deciduous. It rarely flowers in cultivation, but blooms inconspicuously in paired cyathiums near the stem end. The specific epithet means milk, perhaps referring to the milky sap of the plant.
