中央アメリカから南アメリカ、それにカリブ海諸島が原産です。海抜ゼロに近い標高のある道ばたや荒れ地などに生え、高さは１５〜２００センチになります。弱い茎は直立したり横たわったりして、しばしば下部の節に根をだします。その生息域全体で、緩和剤および一般的な強壮剤として民間療法で使用されています。

キツネノマゴ科キツネノマゴ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Justicia pectoralis。英名は Tilo。

The Tilo (Justicia pectoralis) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Acanthus family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Central America, South America and the Caribbean Islands. This herb grows on roadsides and waste places at elevations near sea level, and up to 15-200 cm in height. The weak stems that can be erect to spreading or decumbent and often form roots at their lower nodes. Across its habitat range it is used in folk medicine as a relaxant and general tonic.
