わが国の本州、東北地方以南に分布する「あしび（馬酔木）」の変種です。鹿児島県の屋久島に分布しています。倒披針形の葉が枝先に集まってつきます。４月から５月ごろ、枝先から円錐花序をだして、白色の小さな壺形の花を咲かせます。ふつうの「あしび」は花序が下垂しますが、本種は立つのが特徴です。

ツツジ科アセビ属の常緑低木で、学名は Pieris japonica var. yakushimensis。英名はありません。

"Yakushima-ashibi" (Pieris japonica var. yakushimensis) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is a variety of "Japanese andromeda" that is distributed south of the Tohoku region of Honshu in Japan. This species is distributed in Yakushima, Kagoshima Prefecture. The oblanceolate leaves gather at the tip of the branch. From April to May, panicles are borne on the tips of the branches and bloom small white pot-shaped flowers. The inflorescences of the "Japanese andromeda" hang down, but this species is characterized by standing.
