ヨーロッパが原産です。乾燥した野原や放牧地、道ばたなどに生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。おもに６月から９月ごろ、紅紫色で直径２．５〜３センチの頭花を咲かせます。頭花の真下に鱗状の総苞片があるのが特徴です。

キク科ヤグルマギク属の多年草で、学名は Centaurea jacea。英名は Brown knapweed、Brownray knapweed。

The brown knapweed (Centaurea jacea) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe. This herb grows in dry fields, meadows and roadsides, and can reach 30-90 cm in height. The flower-heads are magenta and 2.5-3 cm across, and bloom mainly from June to September. They are difined by the scale-like bracts beneath the flower-heads.
